SAN ANGELO, TX – The Tom Green County Commissioners Court joined Sheriff Nick Hanna Tuesday morning and a full house of law enforcement officers to honor two men who helped an injured deputy subdue a fleeing suspect.
Zachary Jackson and Bradley Smelt assisted Deputy Zach Davis in May 2021 when Davis was attempting to stop a suspect. While he was attempting to stop the suspect in his vehicle, the suspect took off and dragged Davis approximately 500 feet.
The TGCSO released the following information about the incident at the time:
On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, a Tom Green County Sheriff's deputy initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of FM388 and Longhorn Drive. During the stop, the driver was confirmed to have an outstanding warrant for Class A Theft. As the deputy attempted to effect the arrest, the driver attempted to flee in his vehicle and subsequently dragged the deputy a significant distance. The deputy was ultimately able to bring the suspect vehicle to a stop and the subject was taken into custody approximately 500 feet from the scene of the original traffic stop. Two good samaritans who witnessed the incident as it occurred, responded and assisted the deputy by aiding in the restraint of the suspect. Additional officers from the San Angelo Police Department and the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office also provided assistance.
