Sheriff's Office Identifies Wednesday's Standoff Suspect

 

SAN ANGELO, TX – The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office released more information about Wednesday's standoff.

As previously reported, on Jan. 6, multiple law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the La Quinta Inn for the report of a rollover crash. See: WATCH: Armed Suspect Trapped in Wrecked Vehicle

According to the Tom Green County, on Jan. 6 at approximately 10:30, investigators from the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division were conducting surveillance on a known felony fugitive.

As the fugitive was entering a vehicle, he observed investigators and began to flee in the vehicle.  Investigators began to follow and as the fugitive rounded a corner at high speed he lost control and rolled the vehicle.

After the vehicle came to rest the suspect was observed with a handgun and after refusing to exit the vehicle made a statement that he wouldn't be taken alive.  Investigators were eventually able to defuse the situation and the suspect, Agapito Chappa III, DOB 04/07/1980 surrendered without further incident. 

Investigators were assisted by the Sheriff's Office Patrol Division, Tom Green County Constables, Texas Department of Public Safety and the San Angelo Police Department.
