SAN ANGELO, TX — The annual Juneteenth celebration was organized and held Saturday starting at 10 a.m. in Martin Luther King Park, 2121 Martin Luther King Dr. Parents and children of all ages were seen setting up the party to celebrate the day, June 19, 1865, just after the Civil War ended, when Union Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston Island and read General Order Number 3.
“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free,” the general order stated.
At that time in 1865, history books estimate that 250,000 slaves in Texas were freed.
Late Saturday at around sundown, at San Angelo’s MLK Park where the Juneteenth celebration was ongoing, police were called about gunfire being heard. Police arrived to investigate but left empty handed.
Sunday morning police asked for tips from anyone who witnessed or knew anything about the shots fired.
