Eastland County Murder Suspect Captured in Canada

EASTLAND, TX – In June of this year Burton Duane Sanborn was murdered inside his home. According to police, the preliminary autopsy revealed that the 78-year-old had “severe trauma to the head” and police began searching for Derek Cameron Whisenand as a person of interest. Authorities believed Whisenand had fled to Canada shortly after the murder.

According to KTXS, the 28-year-old fled to Canada where he was arrested on Monday. Whisenand was identified after Halifax Regional Police were dispatched to investigate a shoplifting incident.

After the Halifax Police attempted to arrest him, he took off and was captured 30 minutes later. After checking his ID, police learned Whisenand was wanted on a Canada-wide immigration warrant for murder in Texas.

When Whisenand was arrested he had a dog with him and the dog was turned over to a shelter.

Canada Border Services has now taken Whisenand into custody.
