SAN ANGELO, TX – New information has emerged concerning the lockdown that has occurred this morning at Goodfellow Air Force Base.
Goodfellow AFB public affairs said an active duty airman brought a gun to work and that forced the base to lockdown. The base immediately called in their own emergency forces and no one was injured. The man was not able to fire any shots during the incident.
The suspect presumably apprehended was not named. "The safety and security of Goodfellow's service members, employees, and families is the top priority," said The 17th Training Wing Public Affairs Office. "The procedures used today are in place to keep people safe."
According to the Air Force Airmen, Non-commissioned officers, and Senior Non-commission officers' Facebook page called “AirForceForum”, the event at Goodfellow AFB this morning involved more than the public affairs office has released so far.
The maintainer of the Facebook page, John Vonn, stated that the airman was able to bring a gun into his work area concealed inside an Amazon.com delivery box. According to the page’s maintainer, a “source” informed him that, “the event at Goodfellow was more than just a gun on base. Dude snuck it on in an Amazon box. Had some woman pinned against the wall then tried to turn the gun on himself." More here.
Goodfellow AFB public affairs was contacted by the page’s maintainer information, and a Goodfellow AFB spokesman responded with the following message: "The information that we have posted to our social media platforms is the latest information. We will continue to provide updates as and when more information becomes available."
San Angelo LIVE! also reached out to Goodfellow AFB for comment on the speculation. The 17th Training Wing Public Affairs Office issued this statement:
“This incident is currently under active investigation. We do not comment on ongoing investigations. No further details are available at this time.”
The San Angelo ISD took precautions during the incident.
This morning Belaire and Glenmore Elementary Schools were placed in “lockout and hold” due to a safety issue at Goodfellow AFB, said a San Angelo ISD spokeswoman. Lockout and hold means that the exterior doors, including the front office door, are locked and closely monitored for secure entry.
Students remain in class and instruction continues as normal. Students and staff followed the safety steps practiced regularly in school safety drills at SAISD schools.
As soon as SAISD received notification that the safety issue was resolved, campuses resumed normal schedules.
This is still a developing story and more details will be added if they are released.
