SAN ANGELO, TX -- A San Angelo man charged with capital murder in the 2015 shooting of William Valdez took a plea deal Monday to a lesser charge of murder.
29-year-old Jonathan Jesse Marin faced a felony charge of manufacture with intent to distribute a controlled substance and capital murder. He took a plea deal which abandoned the capital murder charge in exchange for a guilty plea. Assistant District Attorney Richard Villarreal offered the plea deal which reduced the charge from capital murder to murder.
The pretrial hearing that turned into a plea hearing also had Marin plead true to a motion to revoke his probation on two previous charges of credit card abuse and possession of a controlled substance.
Marin was sentenced to life in prison on the murder charge and 15 years in prison for the drug charge. The sentences will run concurrently. Marin will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
Marin was charged with murder in the death of William Valdez in his residence on Sellers St. in San Angelo in August of 2015. According to reports, Guillermo Valdez, William Valdez’s son, exchanged words with Eliza Losoya in the driveway of the home. He then went back into the house and locked the front door. He was in his room when he heard glass breaking then gunshots in his father’s room.
William Valdez suffered gunshot under his left arm and was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment. According to his daughter in court today, Valdez was in the hospital for two weeks before he died from his wounds.
William Valdez’s daughter in court during her victim witness statement said through tears, “My dad didn’t deserve this...his life was taken while he was asleep.”
Marin was a co-defendant with Eliza Losoya, Fernando Lavaris Jr., and Eric Martinez.
