Camaro Suspected in Hit-and-Run of Bicyclist Surrounded by Police at Double Dave's

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — As the victim of Friday’s hit-and-run between a motor vehicle and a bicycle remains in ICU at San Angelo Community Medical Center, San Angelo police may have found the suspect.

Late Wednesday afternoon, San Angelo Police Department Traffic Investigator Stephen Quade told us that a concerned citizen tipped police off that the driver of the vehicle described, a “black or dark colored” Chevrolet Camaro, was possibly enjoying a meal at Double Dave’s Pizza this afternoon.

San Angelo police moved in, surrounding the suspect’s Camaro parked in the Southwest Plaza Shopping Center, 3536 Knickerbocker Rd.

Police located the driver, but didn’t specify where he was when found, but his car was clearly parked in the parking space in front of the popular pizza place.

“He confessed to hitting something, but he said he didn’t believe it was a person or someone on a bicycle,” Quade said.

The hit-and-run happened in the 5400 block of Link Road on Friday at about 6:30 p.m., according to police.

The victim, a 49-year-old San Angelo man, was transported to San Angelo Community Medical Center for treatment of incapacitating injuries.  

A witness to the crash told Police the cyclist was traveling north on Link Road when he was struck from behind by a black or dark-colored, two-door, Chevrolet Camaro.

The identity of the suspect and driver are pending the outcome of the investigation. Quade said charges are pending.

Quade credited the intense media coverage for identifying the suspect and creating a critical the break in the case.
