ALPINE, TX- CBS 7 recently reported that there may be a new suspect named in the Zuzu Verk case. It has almost been three months since Verk disappeared.
CBS 7 had an exclusive interview with Chris Estrada. He disclosed to reporters that he believes he's no longer a person of interest, but rather, a suspect.
Last month, LIVE! reported that the grand jury met in Alpine for the second time to discuss matters of the case. That story can be found here.
During the grand jury meeting, Estrada was brought into questioning before his longtime friend and sole suspect, Robert Fabian, Zuzu’s on-again-off-again boyfriend.
“Confident that he has nothing to hide, [Estrada] waived his right to an attorney and chose to answer questions for over three hours,” CBS 7 reported.
After his questioning, Estrada soon learned that he's now a suspect in the disappearance of Verk.
Estrada explained that he was named a suspect in the case for concealing and tampering with evidence.
During their interview, CBS 7 asked Estrada, “Do you have any fear that you might be arrested?”
Estrada responded, “I wouldn’t say fear. If they do, I would be disappointed. You know, them wanting to blame me or not; I still don’t know what happened to Zuzu.”
The claim of being a suspect came from Estrada, but the Alpine Police Chief, Russell Scown, did not confirm or deny his claim.
CBS 7 explained, “Despite what investigators, the community, and Zuzu’s family believe, [Estrada] is steadfast in his claims that both he and [Fabian] are innocent.”
During the interview with CBS 7, Estrada also said, “In the end, whether people want to believe me or not, we’re all on the same team, and we have all been, not just us. A lot of people have been affected by this tragedy, and I’m not going to hide from it. I’d rather answer everyone’s questions. I still have faith that there won’t need to be any arrest, at least on my end.”
Sources for CBS 7 said the grand jury will be reconvening once again in the near future.
