SAN ANGELO, TX – On the daily booking report released from the Tom Green County Jail, it’s not uncommon to see a few people arrested for domestic violence. In fact, two people went to jail in the past 24 hours for this common San Angelo crime.
San Angelo Police Sgt. Tim Coffman said, at around 1:37 a.m. yesterday morning, San Angelo Police arrested 26-year-old Victor Scott Rodriguez for Assault Causes Bodily Injury-Family Member after police were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of East Harris Avenue in regards to a domestic dispute.
Early this morning, at around 1:33 a.m., Coffman said officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of Orient Street, also in reference to a domestic dispute. After an investigation, police arrested 31-year-old Jimmy Perez for a Class C Misdemeanor Assault.
Overall, since Nov. 1, 27 people were arrested on family violence related crimes, and the San Angelo Police reported receiving 172 calls of service from Nov. 1. Despite this, compared to last year, the numbers of domestic violence calls of service are down from 2015. There were some months, however, that had higher calls of service than in the previous year.
For 2015, SAPD had a total of 4,376 calls for service related to domestic abuse offenses. For the month of November in 2015, there were 320 calls. With nine days left (including today), SAPD would need to receive 148 calls to meet that number.
Based on the numbers through October of both years, there were 3,717 domestic violence calls in 2015, and 3,574 in 2016, which is a difference of 143 calls.
According to SAPD, calls went up this year for the months of January, March, May, June and September. The changes ranged from 3 to 8 percent. There were more substantial changes, however, in the months where DVCFS went down. Calls went down in February, April, July, August and October. The changes ranged from 5 to 19 percent. October witnessed the largest change; domestic violence calls went down by 19 percent from the previous year.
With the rest of November and December left to go, DVCFS would have to reach 630 to meet last year’s numbers.
Previously, SAPD officials explained that domestic violence calls have remained pretty consistent over the years, and the spike in numbers tend to occur erratically; thus, it’s hard to determine specific trends.
