For the month of July, a grand jury in Tom Green County met and indicted 60 people. Although drugs topped the list of indictments, there were a few noteworthy cases—some that may be somewhat graphic for readers, especially in the case of Robert Denzel Profit, 24.
San Angelo Man Continually Sexual Assaults 6-Year-Old
This month, a grand jury indicted Robert Denzel Profit for the continuous sexual abuse of a 6-year-old girl.
According to the indictment, on or about the 8th day of May 2016, and during a period that was 30 or more days in duration (from or about Jan. 1, 2016 through May 6, 2016), Profit intentionally and knowingly caused the sexual penetration of the child victim.
In the complaint, the child’s mother contacted the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office. The case was assigned to Deputy Jacob Garon, who observed the live forensic interview of the victim.
According to the complaint, on May 12, 2016, the victim was in the vehicle with her mother driving to H-E-B. She told her mother that Profit "has been bad."
“[The] victim stated that the Defendant sometimes makes her help him pee,” the complaint stated.
When the mother asked the child to explain, the victim stated Profit makes her watch videos (pornography), and then makes her copy what is on the video.
The forensic interview was set at the Hope House, 317 Koberlin.
During the interview, the girl continued to describe how Profit abused her orally, vaginally and anally.
“The victim stated she told him it hurt, and she didn’t want to do it anymore,” the complaint said.
The victim also stated the first time it happened was when she turned five years of age, and the last time Profit “made her preform” was a school day before Mother’s Day.
Profit faces Sex Abuse of Child Continuous: Victim Under 14, which is a first degree felony.
Man Accused of the Continuous Assault of Child Jumps Bail/Fails to Appear in Court
Many readers may remember the case of Stephen Kelly Franks, 39, who is also accused of the continuous sexual assault of a child (read more here and here).
According to court documents, the victim was “raped” by Franks on multiple occasions. The sexual assault began when the child was in kindergarten, and the sexual contact would occur almost daily from that time until the child moved away from the home.
On April 25, 2016, Franks was “lawfully released from custody” on this pending felony charge on the condition that he appear in court. However, he failed to do so, and a warrant was put out for his arrest.
Franks later turned himself in and was arrested on an outstanding warrant. He now faces Bail Jumping and Fail to Appear Felony, a third degree felony.
Child Endangerment on the Loop
Readers may remember Colton Daniel Beard (click here). On or about May 24, 206, he recklessly, or with criminal negligence, engaged in conduct that put his son in imminent danger of “death, bodily injury, or physical or mental impairment” by abruptly braking his vehicle ahead of his partner, who had the child in her vehicle at the time.
According to the complaint, San Angelo Police Officer Ed Hunger was dispatched to the 3800 block of Loop 306 for a crash involving three vehicles.
Officer Hunger said Beard stated he hit his brakes to make Tara Bruton slow down and to stop following him. Bruton was driving the vehicle behind Beard, and when she applied her brakes, the car behind her did the same, as did a vehicle behind that one. This resulted in a three car pile-up.
Witnesses told Officer Hunger Beard slowed down for no apparent reason, and he had been driving “recklessly.” The couple got into a verbal argument, and Bruton was driving to her mother’s residence. Beard followed her.
Beard admitted he knew his child was in the vehicle, and he admitted to applying the brakes in front of Burton.
As a result of Beard’s actions, the child received bodily injury and scratch marks by the child safety seat, and all occupants of the three vehicles noted they were going to the hospital at the time for injuries resulting from the wreck.
Beard faces a State Jail Felony.
