The Year Ends with Shootings, a Motor Vehicle Accident and More in San Angelo

Since Monday’s booking report update, quite a bit has happened in San Angelo. The end of 2015 finalized with a shooting incident, a major vehicle accident, drugs, resisting arrest and more.

One Family Altercation Took Things a Bit Far

Tracy Gonzalez, public information & social media officer for the San Angelo Police Department, said SAPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of North Street just after 4 a.m. this morning for the report of shots fired. Upon arrival, a 15-year-old male approached the officers and told them he had been shot. Officers also observed several people physically fighting in the front yard of the resident.

“Officers attempted to break up the fights; however, the subjects would not comply and became aggressive,” said Gonzalez.

Additional units and nearby Tom Green County Sheriff Deputies arrived to assist with control of the scene, Gonzalez added. Officers also administered emergency triage to the shooting victim until medics arrived. The teenage victim was transported to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance where he was admitted for treatment of gunshot wounds to his arm and hand. Gonzalez said his condition is unknown.

“Subsequent to the investigation, Detectives learned the shooting arose from a verbal dispute involving several family members that became physical,” Gonzalez stated.

Also, at some point during the incident, one family member retrieved two firearms, allegedly in an attempt to break up the fights. The man’s wife, later identified as Sophia Bara, 34, of San Angelo, grabbed one of the firearms and threatened the family members.

“The gun then discharged and struck the victim,” explained Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said two additional victims were also treated at Shannon for minor injuries sustained during the physical altercation, and Bara was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and transported to the Tom Green County Jail. Gonzalez noted that no other arrests have been made, but additional charges may be forthcoming.

An Early Morning Crash to Start the New Year

Prior to this violent family affair, San Angelo Police and emergency responders were dispatched to Main and East Harris at 2:20 a.m. for a major motor vehicle accident.

Gonzalez said the driver of a black 2016 Honda Civic driven by a 24-year-old female was traveling eastbound on Harris approaching Main St. At the same time, a 25-year-old female in a white 2004 Ford Mustang was traveling in the same direction. The driver of the Civic made an unsafe lane change into the path of the Mustang. The woman hit the brakes, which caused the driver of the Mustang to crash into the back portion of the Civic.

Luckily, neither drivers, nor their passengers, were injured, and all people involved wore their seatbelts; however, the driver of the Civic was cited for making an unsafe lane change.
