DPS Arrests Over 1,000 Drunk Drivers During July 4 Enforcement Program

AUSTIN – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers made more than 1,000 DWI arrests during a special enforcement period that spanned 11 days and included the July 4th holiday. The enhanced DWI enforcement effort took place from June 27 – July 7.

“Impaired drivers are a danger to themselves and other travelers across the state, and DPS troopers are dedicated to helping prevent deadly crashes by getting dangerous drivers off the road,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “These holiday patrols are aimed at saving lives and encouraging safe driving practices.”

DPS Highway Patrol troopers made 1,051 DWI arrests during the July 4th enforcement period. Of those arrests, 219 were the direct result of a Texas Department of Transportation grant, which allowed increased patrols in high-risk locations during times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.

DPS enforcement also resulted in more than 15,000 speeding citations, more than 2,500 seat belt/child safety seat citations, 626 fugitive arrests, and 564 felony arrests during this time period.
