SAN ANGELO, TX — Two unrelated incidents at the intersection of Weston Road and Arden Road on Monday snarled traffic near San Angelo State Park after a tractor-trailer downed overhead cables and a separate rear-end crash sent a pickup through a park fence.
A westbound Ford Edge preparing to turn onto Weston Road was struck from behind by a GMC 1500 pickup whose driver failed to control speed, police said.
The GMC continued off the roadway, through a state park fence and into trees on park property.
Each vehicle had one occupant. Both drivers, described as elderly, were taken to a hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be serious or incapacitating; they were transported primarily for evaluation.
Separately, a tractor-trailer hauling an oversized manufactured home struck and pulled down overhead cables while attempting a turn at the intersection. The truck stopped in the roadway. The incidents were not related, the police said.
The downed line, believed to be a cable line, and the vehicles in the roadway created congestion until utility crews and others could respond. State park staff worked to repair the fence to keep the park’s longhorn herd contained. A towing company planned to use a chainsaw to clear brush and extract the GMC.
The GMC driver is expected to be cited for failure to control speed. The tractor-trailer driver faces a possible citation related to the oversized load; escorts required for such hauls were not present, police said.
