MIDLAND, TX — A 50-year-old Big Spring man was killed early Friday in a single-vehicle crash on the Interstate 20 service road, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
DPS said the crash occurred around 3 a.m. when Ryan Jae Baughn was traveling eastbound on the I-20 service road at an unsafe speed and attempted to enter an on-ramp.
According to investigators, Baughn's SUV veered off the right side of the roadway. He attempted to correct, causing the vehicle to cross the eastbound lanes, pass through the cable barrier in the median and come to rest in the westbound lanes.
The vehicle caught fire, and Baughn was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said weather and road conditions were clear at the time of the crash. Due to the condition of the vehicle after the fire, investigators were unable to determine whether Baughn was wearing a seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation by DPS.
