Brownwood Woman Killed Leaving Comanche County Hospital Driveway

COMANCHE COUNTY, TX – A Brownwood woman was killed Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 16, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

It happened around 1:20 p.m., about half a mile north of County Road 413. DPS reports state that a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 47-year-old Kelley Jo Wellmaker, exited a private drive at Comanche County Medical Center and attempted to turn left onto SH 16.

A 2002 Chevrolet 2500 pickup, driven by 35-year-old Matthew Hunter Golden of Deleon, was traveling north on SH 16. Another vehicle in front of Golden’s truck was slowing to turn into the same private drive. Investigators determined Wellmaker failed to yield the right of way when exiting, leading to a collision with Golden’s pickup.

Wellmaker, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. Golden, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered minor injuries.

The posted speed limit in the area is 75 miles per hour.
