Woman, Dog Killed After Running Into Traffic on Texas Highway

 

DALLAS, TX — A woman attempting to save her dog on a Texas highway was struck and killed early Thursday, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the woman, identified as 35-year-old Melanie Rachelle Dunahue, was walking her dog along Interstate 35E at Royal Lane when the animal ran into traffic. Dunahue followed, but both were hit by an oncoming vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver involved in the crash stopped and is cooperating with investigators, officials said.

The southbound lanes of the interstate were temporarily shut down but reopened by the morning rush hour, according to WFAA.

The incident remains under investigation.
