SAN ANGELO, TX — A driver believed to be intoxicated crashed into the patio of The Tilted Mug early Wednesday morning, leaving extensive damage to the structure and another vehicle parked on the premises.
This happened around 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 19 at the bar located at 3520 Knickerbocker Road. Witnesses reported that the man, who appeared visibly impaired, resisted efforts by friends to take him home. Shortly after, patrons heard a loud crash and discovered the driver had collided with the bar’s patio and struck a car owned by an employee.
Photos from the scene show the patio’s railings and support beams completely mangled, with debris scattered across the area. Both the driver’s car and the employee’s vehicle sustained heavy damage, with the driver’s car later towed from the scene.
Authorities arrested the driver on-site. No injuries were reported in the crash. However, The Tilted Mug’s patio was deemed a total loss, and the employee’s vehicle was also declared totaled.
According to the Tom Green County Jail roster, a man identified as 40-year-old John Montelongo was booked on Dec. 19 at 2:22 a.m. on a charge of driving while intoxicated, with a bond set at $1,000.
The San Angelo Police Department has confirmed it was Montelongo who was involved in the crash. Upon investigation, officers observed indicators that led to the arrest of Montelongo for DWI.
Initial estimates place the total damages of the business at over $10,000.
The bar remains open for business.
