CRANE COUNTY, TX — Texas Department of Public Safety officials have released new details regarding the fatal head-on collision near Imperial that claimed the lives of three Buena Vista ISD students and a Brownfield man.
According to DPS, the crash occurred on Wednesday, November 20, when 48-year-old Gary Don Liles of Brownfield was driving southbound on FM 1053. His GMC Sierra collided head-on with a Jeep Wrangler traveling northbound, carrying 18-year-old twin brothers Jackie and Jaden Perkins and their 16-year-old sister, Nautica Perkins.
Authorities report the Jeep Wrangler was fully engulfed in flames following the collision, killing all three siblings on impact. Liles was airlifted to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Perkins siblings were children of Patrol Lt. Heather Perkins of the Ector County Sheriff’s Office, a 23-year veteran, and Jackie Perkins Sr., a retired ECSO officer with 37 years of service.
Buena Vista ISD closed schools for the remainder of the week in response to the tragedy, and grief counselors are on campus to support the community. The Ector County Sheriff’s Office launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist the family with funeral expenses and other unforeseen costs.
Sergeant Steven Blanco with DPS confirmed the crash remains under investigation, with no further information about the cause released at this time.
