DPS: Michigan Woman Killed in I-20 Crash Near Putnam Due to Wet Roadway

PUTNAM, TX — A 66-year-old woman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was killed, and two others were injured in a single-vehicle crash early Monday on Interstate 20, about three miles east of Putnam, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Tammy Sue Burks, a passenger in a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck, lost her life after the vehicle, driven by 24-year-old Mark Anthony Smith Jr. of Rotan, Texas, lost control. The preliminary investigation suggests that Smith lost control due to wet road conditions, causing the truck to leave the roadway and overturn into a barrow ditch. Burks, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at Hendrick Medical Center just after 3 a.m. by Dr. Philpott.

Smith and another passenger, 21-year-old Makayla Nicole Line, also from Rotan, were injured in the crash. Both were wearing seatbelts and were transported to Hendrick Medical Center with non-incapacitating injuries. They are reported to be in stable condition.

The crash occurred during rainy conditions. The posted speed limit in the area is 75 mph.
