AUSTIN, TX - A tragic incident unfolded in southeast Austin resulting in one fatality after a vehicle collided with a CapMetro bus that had halted to pick up a passenger, Austin police confirmed on Monday morning.

The collision occurred at the bus stop on the westbound lanes of State Highway 71 near Del Valle Street, close to the vicinity of the Austin airport.

Authorities responded to the crash report at approximately 9:37 a.m.

A vehicle carrying four occupants rear-ended the stationary bus, leading to critical injuries among two passengers who were transported to the hospital by Austin-Travis County EMS.

Regrettably, one of the critically injured individuals succumbed to the injuries sustained in the collision.

Emergency medical services administered aid to several individuals on the bus, although the exact number treated remains unspecified by the police.

After a thorough investigation into the collision, all lanes on the highway were reopened by 12:49 p.m. following the earlier closure caused by the incident.

Earlier reports from Austin-Travis County EMS indicated the involvement of at least six individuals in the collision, with ongoing CPR procedures at the scene. The EMS response involved three ambulances, a physician assistant, and two commanders addressing the situation.

Austin Fire Department also dispatched resources to the scene, deploying three engines and a battalion chief to aid in patient care and scene management.

Officials urged the public to steer clear of the affected area as investigations and emergency response efforts persisted.
