LLANO, TX — A 21-year-old San Angelo woman was killed in a crash just west of Llano on Tuesday, May 16. According to the Texas DPS, the two-car, head-on crash was the result of her not able to safely complete passing a long line of slower moving vehicles on a narrow, two-lane highway.
Troopers responded to the crash in the 4400 block of SH 71 in Llano County a few miles west of the city of Llano at 5:38 p.m. When troopers arrived they learned the crash was fatal.
The Texas DPS Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2009 Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound on the two-lane highway and attempted to pass a long line of slower moving vehicles. At the same time, a 2008 Chevrolet 1500 pickup was traveling westbound on the same highway.
The Nissan was not able to complete the pass safely and collided head-on with the Chevrolet in the westbound Lane. According to photos at the scene, a fire erupted following the crash.
As a result of the crash, the female driver of the Nissan, identified as Kiana Torres, age 21, from San Angelo was pronounced dead at the scene by Llano County Precinct 1 JP Judge Marquis Cantu. According to Torres’ Facebook page, she had celebrated her birthday a week prior.
“The Texas Department of Public Safety would like to remind all drivers to minimize distractions, don’t drive fatigued, don’t drink and drive, obey traffic control devices and always wear your safety belt,” The Texas DPS stated.
