Driver and Passenger Trapped Following Crash in the Chicken District

SAN ANGELO, TX — A driver and passenger were trapped when first responders arrived at Knickerbocker at S. Jackson Friday afternoon involving three small and imported SUV type vehicles. The crash impacted traffic headed to the Cane’s Chicken and the Rosa’s Mexican Cafe on the north side of the intersection known as “The Chicken District.” Traffic headed to the Chick-Fil-A and the Taco Bell were generally unaffected by this crash since both establishments were across the street.

Jackson and half of the lanes of Knickerbocker were closed while San Angelo Police and the fire department rescued the occupants of a white Nissan SUV. Both occupants were trapped inside the Nissan. We saw two people carried off on stretchers who were trapped.

Police said the black Honda Fit was headed northeast on Knickerbocker towards the center of town but attempted a left turn onto S. Jackson to head north. When the black Honda crossed the oncoming lanes, the white Nissan was headed southwest on Knickerbocker and collided with the black Honda Fit. The force of the collision by the Nissan was so great that the two cars also collided with a gray Hyundai SUV in the southbound lanes of S. Jackson.

Both occupants of the white Nissan, once freed, were loaded onto stretchers and rushed to Shannon Medical Center with minor injuries.

Police so far have no credible witness to tell them if the traffic light for the black Honda Fit was green for a left turn. The Nissan and the Honda drivers are claiming each had the green signal. Therefore, no traffic citations were issued at the scene.

The crash happened at around 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023.
