SAN ANGELO – Tom Green County Deputies again participated in the Select Traffic Enforcement Program during the month of May. The STEP Safe/Comp and STEP CMV programs are set up and designed to aid in the State of Texas' attempt to bring the amount of deaths and major motor vehicle crash injuries on Texas highways to zero for just one day.
For the past several years, approximately 10 people have died every day in crashes in Texas.
It has been over 21 years since Texas has seen a day without a death on a Texas roadway. Most crashes and fatalities are preventable and caused by things such as speeding, drunk driving and distracted driving.
The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office is proudly joining these programs in an attempt to make the highways in Tom Green County a safer place to drive.
While participating in the program in May, Deputies conducted 165 traffic stops, which is an increase from 101 in April 2022.
These traffic stops included 139 enforcement actions for speeding, 2 intersection violations, and 62 other infractions not specifically identified. During the Commercial Motor Vehicle STEP Program, Deputies conducted 30 traffic stops.
These traffic stops included 7 actions for speeding, 31 actions involving commercial motor vehicles, and 3 other types of infractions not specifically identified.
