SAN ANGELO, TX – Two firefighters and one police officer were hurt during the explosion that happened this evening.

At around 7 p.m. the San Angelo Firefighters were dispatched for a structure fire to the 1300 block of Orient St near the corner of Ave J.

When they arrived they found the backyard of the house was filled with debris that was on fire. The firefighters were in the middle of putting the fire out when an oxygen tank exploded. According to Chief Todd Sanford "when the tank exploded it knocked the firefighters off their feet o the ground, and their helmets off their heads."

"They took a really big blow from the explosion," said Chief Stanford. "It knocked their helmets off and blew them fifteen feet away to the ground."

The EMS were immediately called and the three injured were taken to the hospital and are in good condition at this time.

After the explosion it did not take long for the firefighters to put the fire out.

According to Cpt. Matthew Ellison, they believe that the explosion was caused by oxygen tanks due to them finding multiple tanks in the backyard.
