DPS Identifies Victim of U.S. 67 Crash on Friday

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Texas DPS identified the woman killed in the vehicle vs. Peterbilt truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer crash on Friday afternoon. The semi-trailer was empty, according what first responders told us at the scene, and we subsequently learned from several witnesses that the truck hauls crude oil out of the Permian Basin.

Killed in the crash was Anna Bilberry Whitman, 83, of Mertzon.

According to the Texas DPS, she was headed north on FM 2335 at the intersection of U.S. 67 and turning left. DPS reported that Ms. Whitman failed to yield the right-of-way to a southwest-bound Peterbilt rig as she turned onto U.S. 67. The Peterbilt hit the rear of Ms. Whitman’s 2011 Hyundai Tucson.

The intersection is approximately 8 miles southwest of San Angelo.

When hit, the Tucson spun clockwise off the roadway where it hit a metal light pole hard enough for it to fall to the ground. Afterwards, the Tucson rolled and came to a rest upside down in the barrow ditch.

The driver of the Peterbilt, Leigh Ann Glass, 50, of San Angelo, was not injured.

Ms. Whitman was rushed to the Shannon Medical Center emergency room and was later pronounced dead by Dr. Lance Hafter, M.D.

DPS reported that all occupants were wearing seatbelts. The weather was clear and the roadway dry. The crash at the intersection of U.S. 67 and FM 2335 happened at 5:03 p.m. The speed limit where the crash happened is posted at 75 m.p.h.

Dove Creek VFD assisted at the crash scene.

This stretch of Hwy 67 had the speed limit lowered to 70Mph after a number of fatal wrecks several years ago. The speed restriction on this curve is 65 MPH. I hydroplained the curve back in 1964 and almost wrecked. There have been three or four fatalities here over the last five years.
