Two People Killed and Several Injured in I-20 Crash

SWEETWATER, TX - Today, Department of Public Safety state troopers are investigating a crash with two casualties east of Sweetwater in Nolan County. Five vehicles were involved.

According to DPS, two people are confirmed dead. Another person was transported to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene by helicopter, and several others went by ambulance to Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater.

DPS officials said an 18-wheeler hauling a flat-bed trailer was headed westbound on I-20 when the driver veered into the center median and through the cable system, hitting two vehicles in the eastbound lanes of I-20 and struck a total of three vehicles. Additionally, the cable barrier in the median snapped, hitting another vehicle, and a fourth vehicle was damaged by debris from the wreck.

As a result of the crash, which occurred at about 9:45 a.m., eastbound I-20 at mile marker 251 was closed, and traffic diverted onto the northbound access road.

When an 18-wheeler inadvertently leaves the road and confronts oncoming traffic it can take out quite a few vehicles along with the people in them. How tragic.
