According to the San Angelo Police Department and Chief Tim Vasquez, Sgt. Fred Dietz is in stable condition doing well, and "in good spirits."
SAPD expects that Dietz may be transferred from a hospital in Dallas back to San Angelo within the next seven days.
Dietz was in a crash at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday morning. He was driving westbound on Humble Rd. in the northern part of San Angelo. Police reported that he pulled out onto U.S. 87 to turn south and was hit by a northbound utility truck.
Dietz’s unmarked police car was T-boned by the truck, sending his vehicle across both northbound lanes, the center median, and the southbound lanes. The car came to a rest turned 180-degrees around in the west barrow ditch. Dietz was extracted from the driver’s side by San Angelo Firefighters and rushed to Shannon Medical Center in an ambulance with police escort.
