The driver of a 2006 Harley Davidson MC, John Edward Whiteley, 53, of Abilene was pronounced dead Friday evening after crashing into a 2010 Toyota SV on US-83, about 8 miles south of Abilene, said a DPS press release Saturday.
According to the release, at 6:50 p.m. Friday, the driver of the Toyota, Terrell W. Williams, 66, of Abilene was traveling south on US-83 while Whiteley traveled northbound. Williams turned left in a crossover and made a U-turn; however, he failed to yield the right of way causing Williams to crash into him.
Williams walked away with no injuries, but Whiteley was pronounced dead at Hendrick Medical Center by Judge Mike McAuliffe. His body was transported to Abilene Professional Services.
The release stated that the posted speed limit in the area was 75 mph, and weather conditions were dry and clear.
DPS stated that this is a reminder of the importance of slowing down and looking carefully when turning around or entering another roadway. It’s also necessary when under the cover of darkness. Motorcycles are smaller and may blend in with other traffic. It can also be difficult to spot a single headlamp that blends in with other vehicle headlamps. Investigators are not sure what happened in this situation, but DPS reiterated that drivers must slow down and take their time when making turns, changing lanes and entering roadways.
