One Killed, One Injured in Sutton County Crash

SONORA, TX — A two-vehicle crash on U.S. 277 north of Sonora left one man dead and another with minor injuries Friday morning, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened about 11:30 a.m. Aug. 8 about 4 miles north of Sonora. DPS said a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup driven by William Edward Ringland, 58, of Victoria, was traveling north when it crossed the center stripe into the southbound lane.

A 2023 Peterbilt truck tractor towing a semi-trailer, driven by Carlos Martinez Salazar, was headed south. Salazar attempted to steer right to avoid the collision but was unable to, and the pickup struck the front of the semi-trailer.

Ringland was pronounced deceased at the scene by Sutton County Justice of the Peace Tammy Liska. Salazar was transported to Lillian M. Hudspeth Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

The posted speed limit in the area is 75 miles per hour. DPS reported weather conditions as clear and the road as dry at the time of the crash. The Sutton County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
