Off-Duty San Angelo Policeman Helps Nab Hit-and-Run Driver

A man in his late teens or early 20s driving a maroon GMC Envoy ran into multiple cars after fleeing a Sherwood Way crash that he caused. He was caught because an off-duty San Angelo policeman followed him about 15 blocks into north San Angelo.

The suspect turned left into EZ Pawn Shop, 3101 Sherwood Way, and collided with a black, older-model Jeep Cherokee that happened to be headed east at the wrong time, disabling it. After that, the driver fled eastbound after backing up to clear the crash scene.

Meanwhile, an off-duty San Angelo police officer in a civilian vehicle followed the driver down Sherwood Way, north on Childress St., over the Houston Harte, and into north San Angelo.

Police said that the driver ran several stop signs until turning right onto Webster. There he attempted to enter an alleyway near the 2100 block of Webster, but he turned wide, backed up, hitting a second vehicle parked on Webster. That car was a gray Chevrolet Cruze. The hit-and-run driver led police on a pursuit for at least 15 blocks.

In all, two vehicles at two separate locations were hit but there were no injuries. Police said that his charges would amount to at least eight citations. Those citations include driving without a valid driver’s license, running multiple stop signs, and fleeing accident scenes.

The incident happened just after 11 a.m. this morning.

I drive Houston Harte quiet often and usually run about 60mph. I have vehicles passing me on both sides running at least 70 or better and have yet to see a patrol car either going or coming. Also I'm in the outside lane and people coming on from the on ramp I guess assume I'm supposed to stop for them, I can't usually pull to the left as there is traffic in that lane. Its no wonder we have quiet a few wreaks on that road.
