Man Killed in Crash with Peterbilt Truck Near Gustine

 

Tragedy struck a family when the father, a Sugarland man, was killed in a four-vehicle crash involving a truck tractor pulling a semi trailer on SH 36, 6.7 miles east of Gustine in Comanche County Friday afternoon, Aug. 14.

According to the Texas DPS, a 2007 Peterbilt truck was southeast bound on SH 36. Meanwhile, three passenger vehicles were northwest bound. A Midland woman driving a 2013 Chrysler 200 crossed the centerline of the highway and struck the Peterbilt, spun around and entered the south ditch next to the roadway. The woman, Darlene Ottaberry Womack, 34, was not injured.

Behind her, a Sugarland woman driving a 2015 Nissan Rouge took evasive action and missed the Peterbilt that was now in the opposite lane, the Nissan’s, lane of traffic. She safely stopped her vehicle and the Nissan sustained minor damage from flying debris. Behind her was a 2012 Ford Focus driven by a Sugarland man. He struck the Peterbilt head-on, coming to a rest in the north ditch.

Killed was 51-year-old Paul Michael Figenshaw. His passenger, 19-year-old Margaret Mary Figenshaw suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported to Scott & White Hospital in Temple. The driver of the Nissan Rogue was Kim S. Figenshaw, 48, of Sugarland.

The driver of the Peterbilt, Hardy Wilson Reed, Jr., 65, of Lometa was not injured.

The crash happened on Friday at 4:49 p.m., DPS reported, and everyone was wearing a seatbelt.
