Juvenile Driver Fails to Yield on Time to Merge Lanes on Loop, Causes Accident

At about 3:34 p.m. Monday afternoon, a two-vehicle crash on the Houston Harte Freeway caused a major vehicle delay from Bryant to about the 2200 Block of West Houston Harte, said Officer Loudermilk with the San Angelo Police Department.

The officer said the left lane of the freeway was closed off to drivers because of road construction on a guardrail, so people had to merge to the right lane. Unfortunately, drivers tried to merge last minute, which caused the crash.

“It causes a domino effect stop,” Loudermilk said. “They were driving so close together that some of them had to start driving into the field area.”

A male driver of a black Toyota Sequoia who braked and almost came to a stop was hit by a female juvenile driver of a Mazda Protégé. The juvenile driver was cited for failure to control speed.

Medics arrived on the scene and did a check on both drivers and a male juvenile passenger in the Protégé; however, everyone refused medical treatment. Loudermilk said the juvenile driver did have bruising from the airbag, but will probably get checked later by her parents.

Overall, the accident caused a major delay on the Houston Harte Freeway, Loudermilk noted.

“We had it blocked all the way to Bryant at one point,” he said.

Luckily, there were no more accidents as a result, and officials were able to clear up the delay fairly quickly, the officer added.
