A silver Ford Fusion was here from Amarillo with a prospective student visiting Angelo State University today. The prospective student, the passenger, was injured in a crash at the intersection of N. Oakes St. and the Houston Harte frontage road, also known as 6th St., that happened at around 5:30 p.m. Friday.
According to traffic investigator Officer Brian Bylsma of the San Angelo police, the driver of the prospective student’s Ford disregarded a red light at the intersection, leading to a crash that likely totaled two vehicles.
As the Ford illegally entered the intersection, a Ram 2500 pickup was eastbound on 6th Street and could not stop in time to avoid a collision. The pickup hit the Ford then careened off the roadway, hit and damaged a traffic sign, smashed into a light pole as it plowed into a brick building at the intersection.
Initially, there were reports of trapped occupants in the vehicles, but Bylsma said that by the time he arrived, all occupants were free of the vehicles.
The driver of the Ford was cited for disregarding a red light. No one was transported to the hospital, but Bylsma was concerned for the person visiting ASU today. “She took a hit in that passenger seat,” he said.
