Hit and Run Driver Tears up East Harris Street

A black Chevrolet Impala passenger car burst into flames after the driver rammed his car into a red Chrysler 300 at the intersection of Emerson and East Harris Street.

According to police, the Impala was involved in a hit-and-run crash north of that intersection in the 100 block of North Emerson. It was during the run from that crash that the second crash happened.

The impact of the Impala’s crash into the Chrysler 300 sent the Chrysler plowing into the power pole. The pole was leaning dangerously over to the south and power was cut to many residences and businesses near the crash scene.

The driver of the Impala was still at-large as of 7:30 p.m. Police said that a witness told them that the Impala driver was drunk.

The San Angelo Fire Department quickly extinguished the flames of the Impala. It appeared that the fire originated from the engine compartment. The fire spread into the interior of the car and melted the seats.

Other witnesses are telling police that the Chrysler driver did not have the right-of-way and caused the crash.

The investigation continues as traffic investigators try to sort out the mess. Meanwhile, there is a hunt for the driver who fled.

Police said that the at-large driver is a Hispanic male weighing 200 pounds with a medium build. He stands 5’ 5” or 5’ 6” tall.

Update 10:15 p.m.

San Angelo Police Officer Korby Kennedy from the Traffic Division said that there is a full-on investigation of the crash scene. The 51-year-old female who was driving the Chrysler 300 has sustained serious injuries and is in critical condition at Shannon Medical Center.

The driver of the Chevrolet Impala and suspect in the twofer of hit-and-runs has been apprehended and in police custody.

Kennedy said that charges of the suspect are pending the outcome of the investigation. He said they are looking at alcohol being a factor in the crashes.
