One person died late last night after a driver suspected of drinking before driving a 2014 Ram 2500 turned in front of a speeding Honda Civic underneath the North Bryant overpass of the Houston Harte Expressway, police said.
According to investigating Officer Korby Kennedy, the northbound white 2014 Ram 1500 was attempting to turn left onto the frontage road of the Houston Harte Expressway, or 7th Street, and did not yield for the southbound red 1999 Honda Civic that was racing southbound on Bryant. Kennedy said that witnesses alerted police that the Civic was traveling at a high rate of speed. “That could be a contributing factor,” he said.
Kennedy said that police suspect that alcohol may have been a factor. But, he added, the police are still investigating that angle.
The driver of the Civic was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Kennedy, the victim was a Hispanic male in his late teens or early 20s. Kennedy said that releasing the name of the victim is pending notification of the next-of-kin. The driver and passenger of the Ram were treated at the scene.
No one was taken to the hospital via ambulance, Kennedy said.
The 911 call for this crash happened at 11:54 p.m. Saturday night, according to police logs.
