A 29-year-old Keller man visiting San Angelo was injured early this morning when his motorcycle crashed in the 500 block of S. Abe Street.
San Angelo Police were dispatched to the area for the report of a vehicle accident just before 1:00 a.m. this morning. Upon arrival, officers found a man lying in the westbound lane surrounded by several bystanders. The man, later identified as Nathan Werner, was unconscious and bleeding from his head. A motorcycle was also located on its side, several hundred feet from Werner.
Officers provided first aid to Werner until San Angelo Fire Department Medics arrived and transported him to Shannon Medical Center for treatment. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
A Motors officer was requested to the scene to investigate the crash due to the nature of Werner’s injuries. Subsequent to their investigation, police learned Werner had been operating a blue 2006 Harley Davidson Motorcycle at a high rate of speed as he traveled westbound on Concho Street. Werner proceeded to turn south on S. Abe at an unsafe speed and collided with a curb at S. Abe and Santa Fe Park Drive. After the collision, Werner lost control, became disconnected from the motorcycle, and slid on the roadway for approximately 190 feet while his motorcycle slid for approximately 415 feet.
Police interviewed Werner at the hospital and determined that alcohol use was a contributing factor in the crash and a blood specimen was collected. Results are pending.
Werner was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Charges may be filed pending the outcome of this ongoing investigation.
