Donation Site Set Up for Funeral Expenses of Teen Killed in Jeep Rollover

A donation site has been set up to aid the family of Lake View student Jehren Hebert with funeral expenses following the tragic death of the 16-year-old after a rollover crash on Oct. 12.

The site was set up by family friend Stephanie Melendez, who has posted a brief explanation of the cause and a description of the teen she, his family and friends knew.

Asking people to not focus on the loss of life, but the life and memories, Melendez describes Hebert as an athletic teen and gentleman that was very skilled in basketball and had ambitions of one day joining the NBA.

"Jeheren was a good son, a good student, a great basketball player, all around sportsman, and a gentleman," Melendez wrote. "He comes from a great family, too. His parents are Danny and Tekeyia, and [he has] his brother and sister."

Due to the devastation brought on by the loss of a child, Hebert's parents will need to take time off work to make funeral arrangements, Melendez wrote, and in order to assist the family with the costs of funeral and medical expenses, the site was set up.

"They are devastated with their sudden loss," she wrote. "They will need to take time off of work to grieve for thir son as they make arrangements for his funeral. We hope these funds will cover his funeral expenses and allow them to take time off to grieve for their son, for it has been said, no parent should ever bury a child."

Melendez has set a goal of $10k for the Hebert family, and so far $550 of that goal has been met. Donations in excess of burial costs will be applied to medical expenses incurred on the night of Oct. 12 before Hebert passed away.

"There are many things, task, and challenges that lay ahead," she wrote. "So we, the friends, families, and loved ones are reaching out to you to help us help them. Won't you please share this with your friends and ask your friends to share in the joy of putting a worry to rest for a family that truly needs it. His passing is to be mourned shortly and his life is to be celebrated indefinitely, so please when you click the link, feel free to leave a message; the family would love to hear your thoughts, memories, and stories for all to share. Thank you so much to everyone that can donate or even just a simple prayer is so greatly appreciated."

Would love to see the family of the driver pay for all of this. I know if it were my kid who was driving and killed someone - I'd be paying for it.
