Lake View Student Dies in Jeep Rollover Sunday

The victim of yesterday evening’s vehicle crash has died, San Angelo police said. The crash was caused by reckless driving, police said.  The driver of the Jeep that three teens occupied was attempting to “drift” the Jeep in an off-road maneuver. The Jeep rolled-over, and one of the teens was trapped underneath.

Sunday at 7:29 pm, San Angelo police responded to a vehicle accident on private property behind Mayfield Paper Co.  Upon arrival, officers observed a 2001 Red Jeep lying on its side. The Jeep was occupied by three juvenile males all 16 years of age.   Due to the injuries sustained to one of the passengers, the San Angelo Police Traffic Section was called to investigate the accident.

Officers administered first aid to the injured until the San Angelo Fire Department arrived on scene.   SAFD transported the back left passenger, Jehren Hebert, to Shannon Medical Center with critical injuries.     The driver, Cristian Bustos, and front passenger, David Rodriguez, both refused medical treatment at the scene.

Preliminary investigation shows Bustos was driving recklessly while attempting to “Drift” his vehicle on the caliche surface.   As the jeep slid broadside along the caliche, the right wheels dug into the surface and caused the Jeep to flip one and one half times.  Hebert was trapped underneath the vehicle at its resting point.

This morning, at 7:55 am, Herbert succumbed to his injuries while being treated at Shannon.

Jehren Hebert was a student at Lake View High School.

16 year olds don't need to drive. Sure, it's convenient to the American population... our sweet teenagers can cart themselves to school, etc. They can run errands for mom or dad - grocery store, etc. But they aren't mentally capable of the safety involved in operating a vehicle properly! I feel for this family, I do. And when my child is 16, we'll go through the same right of passage to obtain her license. No amount of good parenting is going to solve this... It's a law that needs to change.

Don't do this. Just don't. Kids need physics classes or something, so they'll understand they are not going to come out well in these sorts of "fun games." What a shame for all involved.
I don't think you should call it driving when he was attempting off road stunts. If we were to lose our freedoms by creating new laws after each and every tradgedy we would have none. This is where we are headed. Call it what it is a tragic accident and have sympathy for those who lost a loved one.
new laws isnt going to solve anything. there is no way a parent can watch their kids every move. PERIOD. when i was a teen....i was outa control when my mom wasnt around to watch but yet when i would get caught....the first thing that pops outa the judges mouth is "u should be more aware of what your child is doing when your not around". ive heard that more than once in my teen years. my heart truly breaks for this family. I have 3 kids of my own now and i know i cant and wont be able to follow them everywhere they go or watch everything they do. movies are a huge influence on kids of all ages. my heart and prayers are with this family. may GOD give them the strength they need to make it thru this hard time.
I blame all these movies about driving fast and drifting. These movies make it seem simple, when in fact it's probably professional stunt men doing the actual driving. Nonetheless, movies that glorify these kinds of acts will often be mimicked by fascinated teens.
The obituary previously published has been UPDATED: The Memorial Service for Jehren Hebert has been changed to: FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, San Angelo, TX 12:00pm (noon), Friday, October 17, 2014 Link: http://www.robertmassie.com/obituaries/obituary-listings?obId=343317#/obituaryInfo Thank you.
