PREVIEW: Eldorado and Sterling City Prepare for War in Regular Season Finale

ELDORADO – It may not be a district championship, but these two Eagles teams are fighting for the better playoff spot in what should be a great season finale between Eldorado and Sterling City.

The Sterling City Eagles and the Eldorado Eagles are pretty similar teams that goes way past record. They are both 3-2 in district, both teams have lost to McCamey and Wink, and both teams beat the other three teams in their district.

Sterling City moved up to 11-man football this past offseason and was picked to finish fifth in preseason polls. Eldorado graduated a lot of skill guys last season and hired Chad Tutle to lead the team. Tutle retained the staff that had taken the Eagles on a deep playoff run the year before.

One thing both teams are playing for outside of playoff seeding, is the team they’ll take on in the first round. If the season ended today, Eldorado would play the Albany Lions and Sterling City would rematch against the Miles Bulldogs according to Maxpreps.

Last week, Eldorado lost to McCamey 35-12, and Sterling City lost to Wink 41-7. Eldorado made a change at quarterback and moved Jason Covarrubiaz out to the slot and Omar Barajas in at signal caller. Barajas went 13-29 for 214 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Ethan Elias took in four receptions for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Nino Tambunga had six catches for 81 yards and Covarrubiaz had three for 24 yards.

Wink did most of their damage on the ground against Sterling City taking 28 carries for 219 yards and five scores.

Both head coaches, Trey Sisco and Chad Tutle, said the same thing, their teams have to take care of the ball. Coach Tutle said that Sterling City has some speed and they’re a good physical team.

Coach Sisco said that Eldorado has some size up front of their defense. He also feels that Eldorado runs a similar offense to Sterling City. When the possibility of having a rematch against Miles came up in conversation, Sisco simply said it would be a good measuring stick to see how much better they’ve gotten as a team.

Whichever way this game plays out, both teams have to be excited with the result of the regular season. For Eldorado, to bring in a new head coach and have to find new starters is tough. It was never try to replace the production of the team from the previous season. Also, they are still a young team in a new district, so the future is bright regardless of what happens.

For Sterling City, this is a different situation than they’ve been in the last couple season. They were a championship winning team at 6-man. But to make the playoffs in the first season back as 11-man is very impressive. This is an entirely new format of football the players have never played.

This game will be big for both schools and the winner will most likely play a familiar opponent in the opening round of the playoffs. Tune into COVER1 for exclusive coaches’ interviews, scores, highlights, and more at around 4:00, 8:00, and 10:00 p.m. for any Eagle updates only on San Angelo LIVE!
