SAN ANGELO – The playoffs are closing in and the Wall Hawks could run away with their district while the Mason Punchers and Christoval Cougars could use some help to claim a golden ball after district.
Today, we will look at Wall’s, Mason’s, and Christoval’s district and who they have left and what their currently district standings are.
3A-2 District 2 Region 1
The Wall Hawks are dominating district play and have shut out three straight teams after beating San Angelo TLCA. Early just shut out Grape Creek and Brady beat Ballinger 54-26.
- Wall (7-1, 3-0)
- Early (5-3, 3-0)
- Brady (4-4, 2-1)
- San Angelo TLCA (3-5, 1-2)
- Ballinger (0-8, 0-3)
- Grape Creek (0-8, 0-3)
The Hawks have the toughest final two weeks in the district. Wall takes on Early next week then finishes the regular season against Brady. The Wall/Early game will be one to watch next week and will probably be for the district championship. The Longhorns finish up against the TLCA Eagles.
The Brady Bulldogs have the Grape Creek Eagles in Week 10 then Wall in Week 11. Ballinger has yet to win a game but were tied up with Brady in Week 9 until the Bulldogs started to pull ahead. The Bearcats will have a chance to get a couple wins against the TLCA Eagles next week then Grape Creek in the regular season finale.
The TLCA Eagles are currently fourth in district and have a decent quarterback in Layne Honea when he’s healthy. They won’t lay down against Ballinger and Early so expect a game next week when the Eagles take on the Bearcats. Grape Creek has had a rough season and while they might not have a chance at the post-season, they have a chance to end of a positive note. They’ve got the Brady Bulldogs in Week 10 and the Ballinger Bearcats in Week 11.
2A-1 District 14 Region 4
This five team district features Mason, Stockdale, Johnson City, Junction, and Harper. Stockdale most recently beat Harper 53-6 while Mason shut out the Junction Eagles 60-0. Johnson City was idle this past week.
Current District Standings:
- Stockdale (7-1, 2-0)
- Mason (6-2, 2-0)
- Johnson City (6-2, 1-1)
- Junction (2-6, 1-2)
- Harper (2-7, 0-3)
Next week, Stockdale and Mason match up as the two undefeated teams in district. This game could be for the district championship as Mason is a regular powerhouse in the area and Stockdale already has nearly 2,500 rushing yards. The Brahmas regular season finale is against Johnson City who will be another tough match up.
Other than Stockdale next week, the Punchers play Harper in Week 11. The Longhorns haven’t won a district game and have a bye next week. Harper will have to play a near perfect game against a very good Puncher squad to end the season on a high note.
Johnson City plays Junction next week and need to win to hold onto the third spot in district as the next week they’ll play Stockdale. Junction doesn’t play in Week 11 and just have Johnson City left. A win here would put the Eagles in third place.
2A-1 District 3 Region 1
This six-team district is wild as it extends from Tom Green County and Sutton County out west to El Paso County as teams like Sonora and Christoval play Anthony. That would be a 400 plus mile drive from mile marker one to Jack Pardee Stadium.
Last week, Christoval and Forsan and both teams only scored in the fourth quarter. The Cougars lost to the Buffaloes 6-14. The Sonora Broncos hosted the Anthony and sent the Wildcats on their 402-mile journey home with a loss. Ozona and Reagan County matched up and the Owls beat the Lions 39-7.
Current District Standings:
- Forsan (7-1, 3-0)
- Christoval (4-4, 2-1)
- Sonora (6-2, 2-1)
- Reagan County (5-3, 2-1)
- Ozona (2-6, 0-3)
- Anthony (4-4, 0-3)
Forsan is dominating right now and have only given up 71 points all season. The Buffs still have two young teams to play with Ozona next week and Sonora in the regular season finale. The Cougars have a couple of tests the next couple week against Sonora and Reagan County.
The Broncos might have the toughest schedule left with Christoval in Week 10 and Forsan in Week 11. The Reagan County Owls have played solid football all season and have a trip to another time zone next week against Anthony and finish up the regular season against Christoval in Big Lake.
The Lions are a pretty young team and their record doesn’t really reflect what they are as a team. They’ve been battle tested all season and have won some games they probably weren’t supposed to. Next week, Ozona plays at Forsan and then plays the Wildcats at home. Anthony is home next week against the Owls then have to travel to Ozona. That’s the shortest trip for the Wildcats at 367 miles.
