PREVIEW: Anthony to Make 400 Mile Trip for District Game Against Sonora

SONORA – The Sonora Broncos are looking to get back on track against the Anthony Wildcats this Friday.

Sonora (5-2, 1-1) vs Anthony (4-3, 0-2)

Against the Reagan County Owls, the Broncos lost 24-21 and turned the ball over a couple of times. Sonora jumped out to a 7-0 lead but gave up 17 unanswered points to the Owls after that. This week, Anthony will make the long trip down I-10 to try and get a win in district play.

The Sonora Broncos still have playmakers in Jamie Buitron, Hunter O’Banon, and Edgar DeLuna. They have plenty of weapons in Jonah Galvan, Cason Griffith, Tanner Flanagan, and Juan Castillo.

Through six games, the offense has put up 2,190 yards and O’Banon and Buitron have 1,675 of those and 17 of the 18 rushing touchdowns. DeLuna has 203 yards and the other touchdown. The passing attack hasn’t been as impressive as the rushing attack, but Galvan, DeLuna, and O’Banon over 100 yards. Castillo has 89 yards and two scores. The crazy stat is that DeLuna only has 7 catches for 223 yards and two touchdowns.

That brings up the defense as DeLuna has 92 total tackles, 14 for loss, three quarterback hurries, and one interception. Flanagan follows DeLuna with 32 tackles. Sophomores Tristian Ford and Owen Jones are right there with Flanagan with 31 and 33 tackles each. Darian Reyes and Buitron have four interceptions each and Sonora has a team have 13 picks. Wildcat quarterback Angel Solis won’t want to throw his way as he also has nine passes defended.

The Wildcats took another loss last week when Forsan headed out west. The Buffalos shut out the Wildcats 37-0. Forsan’s defense really gave Anthony fits as Solis only had 18 passing yards and the running game had 38 total rushing yards.

In seven games, Solis has gone 71-113 for 1,219 yards, 15 touchdowns, and one interception. On the ground, Raymond Hernandez had 464 yards and Diego Uscanga has put up 536 yards and two touchdowns. Marcos Gutierrez follows that performance with 407 yards and one score.

Ethan Campos leads the team in tackles with 42 followed by Omar Lujan with 34. Eddie Cardenas and Kenneth Meraz have two sack a piece and as a team the Wildcats have five interceptions, two from Uscanga and Hernandez. Lujan and Daniel Sotelo have four fumble recoveries combined on the season.

The 402-mile trip to Sonora will take Anthony more than six hours and its interstate the entire way. This is an insane district, but Anthony has to play someone and being that far out on an island is going to be difficult to work with when it comes to the UIL realignment.

Sonora being at home gives the Broncos a huge advantage just with the trip, into another time zone none the less, being so long for the Wildcats. Sonora also has playmakers on both sides of the ball and can put up serious points. The Broncos have put up 230 points in seven games which works out to about 33 points a game and have only given up 89 points, just under 13 points a game. The Wildcats have scored 144 points (20.5 points a game) and have given up 22.4 points a game. In district, Anthony has been outscored 74-6.
