MILES- The Miles Bulldogs are set to take on the Ozona Lions in their pre-district finale on Friday.
Miles has been on fire this season starting the year 4-0 and a lot of that is due to the stellar play from junior quarterback Hayven Book. Book has put up some impressive numbers going 52-79 for 957 yards, 18 touchdowns and one interception.
Having that kind of player at the 2A level usually means the offense runs through him but that isn’t the case for the Bulldogs. Running backs Devin Medina and Tanner Wood help keep the offense balanced. Medina, a sophomore, has 18 carries for 247 yards and five touchdowns in four games this year.
Book also has not one, but two receivers who keep defensive coached up at night. Cooper and Carson Ellison have 430 yards and 10 touchdowns between the two of them. Another receiver, Jaylen Torres, has 115 yards and two touchdowns, helps to round out the receiving corps. Book spreads the ball around pretty well as eight different players have caught passes.
The Bulldog defense has been getting after it as well. Miles has four interceptions, six passes defended, three fumble recoveries, and three sacks so far this season. Senior Auden Torres leads the charge with two sacks and two tackles for loss. The defense is also only giving up about eight points per game.
The Bulldogs are looking to stay perfect against the Lions this week. Ozona got their first win last week over the Grape Creek Eagles 34-2. The past few weeks, the Lions have had a tough schedule. In week 2, they played the Wink Wildcats and then in week 3, they played the Mason Punchers.
Ozona (1-3) also has a young quarterback in sophomore Hudson Fowler. This season, Fowler has gone 22-55 for 482 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. The Lions have had more success on the ground than the Bulldogs and are led by Dusty Smith.
Smith has been a playmaker for Ozona and has 26 carries for 235 yards and one touchdown on the ground and has seven receptions for 141 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
Between Smith, Rigo Treto, Logan Thompson, and Logan Fay, the Lions have 687 yards and five touchdowns rushing this year. Ozona also features a pretty balanced attack as Smith, Matthew Daniels, and Max Everett combined for 442 yards and eight touchdowns.
Defensively, Dusty Smith shows up again with an interception. Daniels and Everett have one apiece as well. The Lions also have four fumble recoveries. Ozona also has makes plays behind the line of scrimmage with 15 tackles for loss but only two sacks.
