Friday Night Lights: Midland Legacy Rebels Lose Close One in Overtime

MIDLAND – The 8th ranked Cibolo Steele Knights and the Midland Legacy Rebels were involved in a dogfight on Friday night where the Knights took the win in overtime 35-28.

The Knights made the nearly 350 miles trip to take on the Rebels in one of the better matchups in the state of Texas on Friday night. It took the game going into overtime to settle this one and Cibolo quarterback Chad Warner would end up finding Joe Perez for the 18-yard score to get the win 35-28.

Coming into this game, these two teams matched up very well with both quarterbacks, Legacy’s Marcos Davila and Steele’s Warner both playing very good football so far. Also, Davila is a junior and Warner is a sophomore so these two programs will have success at the signal caller position for the next few couple seasons.

Last year, Legacy had an amazing running back in Makhilyn Young. This season, Steele has their own version of Young in running back Jaydon Bailey who had 58 carries, 375 yards, and six touchdowns coming into this game.

In the first quarter, the Knights got on the board first as Steele back Bailey ran the rock into the endzone from 25 yards out and after a Michael Patterson kick, the first frame would end with Steele getting on the board, 7-0.

The second quarter saw four touchdowns, two apiece for each team. About five minutes into the quarter, Rebel receiver Deonta Sonnier, Davila’s go-to guy, snagged a 13-yard touchdown. Excitement would really kickoff with just under three minutes left in the half.

At 2:34 and at 1:27 in the second quarter, Bailey got to the endzone twice, putting the Knights up 21-7. Legacy would answer with under a minute when Davila hooked up with Sonnier yet again to cut Steele’s lead 21-14.

The first score in the second half wouldn’t come until late in the third quarter when Bailey again took one from 69-yards out to knock Legacy into a 14-point hole going into the fourth quarter.

The Rebels are the Rebels for a reason as Davila and Sonnier would go for a hat trick when Sonnier caught a 39-yard pass to cut the lead to seven. Then, with under :20 to play, on the 2-yard line, Legacy back Zeke Luna would run one off the right side for a score. After a Hayden Smith kick, the game was tied, 28-28.

The Rebels wouldn’t be able to outlast the Knights in overtime as Warner found Perez for the 18-yard score. Steele traveled five hours and went home with a great win. This puts Legacy at 2-2 on the season and Steele is still perfect at 4-0.

Big time players made big time plays, Bailey ended up with 26 carries for 159 yards and four touchdowns and Sonnier took had 4 receptions for 90 yards and three scores.

On the season, Davila now has 14 touchdowns and two interceptions on the year. Warner also threw his first interception on the season. Legacy’s Luna is currently sitting at 80 carries for 455 yards and four touchdowns. Sonnier’s numbers are 22 catchers for 420 yards and eight touchdowns.

This was an incredible pre-district game which starts shortly for the Rebels. Next week, they’ll travel to Converse to take on the 1-3 Judson Rockets and on October 7, 2022, the Rebels will take on their first district opponent, the 3-1 Frenship Tigers. The San Angelo Central Bobcats will play the Legacy Rebels on October 21, 2022, in Midland.
