PFLUGERVILLE – The University Interscholastic League State Executive Committee has suspended Richland Springs head coach Jerry Burkhart for recruiting violations.
According to information from the UIL, Richland Springs head coach Jerry Burkhart has been suspended by the UIL State Executive Committee for three seasons following accusations that he recruited a student from Mullin to Richland Springs in a 14-minute phone call.
Burkhart has been dominating at Richland Springs during his 18 seasons with the Coyotes. He has a 232-13 record and nine state championships with Richland Springs.
The UIL SEC cited a 14-minute phone call between Burkhart and a former Mullin student only four days before that student enrolled at Richland Springs High School.
Burkhart began by saying he’s been accused of recruiting before to which the committee said he should’ve handled the situation better. One comment from the committee read: “14 minutes, there’s no doubt in my mind what happened.”
Recruiting allegations have also come against assistant coach Shawn Rogers and Richland Springs ISD for recruiting in the past but were found not guilty.

PermalinkAh, the rumors of shenanigans by Brownwood's Gordon Wood and Odessa Permian's coaches during Permian's heyday. Note I said "rumors", not proven wrongdoing. This stuff flew fast and furious back in the day.
