WALL – The Wall Hawks High School football team returns to action against Eastland this Friday on the road.
The Hawks are back and fans could see a change to the team this season. But first, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, Wall only had 3 starters return last season and all of them were on the offensive side of the ball. This season, they had 8 offensive, and 10 defensive starters return.
That extra experience will only help the Hawks as they may change things up on their offense. Wall head coach Houston Guy was asked if they expect to put the ball in the air more often this season to which he replied, “We’ll see.”
Football never stops in Wall and Coach Guy said, “We started in January and had a really good offseason. We transitioned that into our track and had a good track season. We had a lot of kids out running track and that just kind of set the tone for the summer with everybody buying in and getting after it. Wanting to turn around our season from last year.”
Last season, Wall went 5-5/3-2 in district and drew the Brock Eagles in the first round of the playoffs. The Hawks would lose that game 40-6.
“Summertime, I thought our kids really did a good job showing up and buying in,” Coach Guy said, “We asked them to do a lot this summer so they jumped in with both feet and we couldn’t be happier.”
Two of the Hawks leaders, Nathan Pepper and Jayden Sellers both expect big things from themselves and their teammates this season and whether they think of themselves as leaders.
“It feels good (to be a leader) it’s a lot of pressure,” Pepper said. Sellers jumped in and said, “We have a lot of leaders it’s not just us two.”
This Friday, Wall takes on the Eastland Mavericks, then play Cisco, Jim Ned, Peaster, and Mason before district. The Hawks first district game will be against cross county Grape Creek. Then Wall squares off against Ballinger, TLCA, Early, and finishes up district against the Brady Bulldogs.
