Barry Sykes, the Voice of Permian Football, Dead at 67

 

ODESSA, TX- Barry Sykes, the voice of Permian Football, has passed away.

Barry Sykes passed away at age 67 on January 28, 2022. He was 67 years old. Sykes' voice became synonymous with MOJO and UTPB Football as well as other teams in the UIL district.

Sykes moved to Odessa, Texas in 1959 and graduated from Permian High School. He attended Odessa College and over his career, worked in media including radio and television. In 1973, Sykes did the play-by-play for Permian games until 2021 and only missed one game in that time.

Barry Sykes also kept records for District 2-6A until 2020.

Sykes' audio clips were used in the 2004 film "Friday Night Lights".

In 2016, Sykes also did play-by-play for the University of Texas Permian Basin and officially became “The voice of the Falcons”.
