SAN ANGELO, TX – A number of local high school football teams survived the 1st round of the Texas high school playoffs over the last week.
COVER1 has a list of area teams that received a gold ball Thursday and Friday.
Just north of San Angelo up US Highway 87, a couple of area teams handled themselves very well in the 1st round.
Defending State Champs, the Sterling City Eagles beat Hermleigh 56-42 and now have a date with Van Horn. The Desert Dwellers out on Interstate-10 won a nailbiter over the Garden City Bearkats 70-69.
The Water Valley Wildcats blanked the Gorman Panthers 58-0 and will meet up with the Lometa Hornets in round 2.
One of the best 6-man teams in Texas history, the Richland Springs Coyotes beat the Sindey Eagles 58-8 and will face off agains the Oglesby Tigers in round 2.
In Class 2A, two teams extended their season into the area around.
The Rocksprings Angoras popped the Snook Bluejays 64-34. The Goats have a date with the Beavers from Fall City in the next round.
Just down US Highway 277, Superman, alter ego of Korbin Corvarrubiaz, and the high octane Eldorado Eagles, were down 20-7 going into the final frame of the game. While Somerville scored 13 4th-quarter points, Eldo scored 4 touchdowns en route to a 35–33 win. The Eagles have a an area round date with scheduled the D’Hanis Cowboys in round 2.
The 3A classification had a couple teams make it to the second round. The Sonora Broncos stomped out the Compass Academy Cougars 79-8 and will play the Canadian Wildcats. The Ballinger Bearcats squeezed by the Crane Golden Cranes to face the Abernathy Antelopes.
In 4A the Snyder Tigers kept the Seminole Indians scoreless and move on the play the Graham Steers.
The 5A classification doesn’t have any area teams in the second round but former Bobcat coach Brent Davis’ new team, the Gregory-Portland Wildcats beat the McAllen Bulldogs 54-13 to force a 2nd round match-up against the Southlake Legacy Titans.
Finally, on to the 6A classification, two teams in San Angelo Central’s district have made it to the area round. Mojo beat El Paso Franklin convincingly 56-28 and will play the Euless Trinity Trojans at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.
The Midland Legacy Rebels beat the Spartans of Pebble Hills and are moving on to to face the Southlake Carroll Dragons
