BURNET, TX – The Eldorado Eagles will fly over to Burnet and take on the Somerville Yeguas at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night.
You read that right. Yeguas is Spanish for a mare, a female horse.
The high-flying Eagle offense puts up 51 points a game where the Yeguas have been giving up 24.3 points to opposing teams.
Eagle Head Coach Jon Long had some thoughts on Somerville, the athlete’s attitudes, and gives his thoughts on rankings.
“Somerville is a good football team. They run a spread, very similar to us in style both offensively and defensively. They have big lineman. They’ve got fast skill kids, so I feel like we match up well there in that aspect.” Long said.
Long added, “We’re a little bit smaller but I like our speed. It looks like they’re well coached…they’re going to be a very good opponent.”
The game is one thing, but how did practice go for Eldorado this week?
“It’s a short week, you always kind of worry about that stuff but we just combined Wednesday and Thursday. It went really well. We’re healthy so the things you want going into the playoffs, we got momentum and that kind of thing. We just got to go play.” Long said.
Jon Long added, “They’re excited, and I’d be worried if they weren’t. I’ve told them all week there’s 64 teams in the playoffs in 2A Division 2 and there will be one at the end that will be victorious, and you want to be that guy. I cannot complain about our kids and their attitude.”
Before the Christoval game, Eldorado was ranked 8th in 2A Division 2 ball. “Ranking don’t really have any bearing on anything. I think it’s more of a conversation piece and it is fun to get some recognition. I think it’s well deserved for the people who get it, you know when we were ranked I thought it was well deserved too but we really don’t get caught up in that. I know a lot of people say that all the time but we really don’t, but it is always good to be recognized.”
Burnet should prepare for an invasion of green. It might be a Thursday game but expect Eldorado to travel well.
