Can Christoval be Kryptonite to Eldorado's Superman?

CHRISTOVAL, TX – The 2A-2 Division 14 District High School Football Championship could very well come down when the Christoval Cougars take on the undefeated Eldorado Eagles this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Christoval.

Christoval (6-1) is coming off a complete thrashing of the Menard Yellowjackets 53-0 which was called early due to the stadium lights cutting off during the game.

Eldorado (6-0) is also coming off a dismantling of the Rocksprings Angoras 53-6.

Like opponents between the Cougs and Eagles are the preseason ranked Wink Wildcats and the Sonora Broncos who are both 4-3.

Both very good football teams which have pretty much beaten everyone in their path except for Christoval when the lost to Roscoe, who is 5-1, 42-30.

The Cougars like to run the ball as Josh Fava is currently ranked 4th in 2A with 1,022 on 102 carries and is tied for 1st with 17 touchdowns. Altogether, Christoval has 25 rushing touchdowns on the season.

Eldorado is a little bit harder since no stats have been updated over the past couple weeks on maxpreps.com, but Korbin Covarrubiaz has been Superman for this Eagles team. Though 4 games, Covarrubiaz had 25 total touchdowns. Reminder, stats have NOT been updated over the past couple games where Eldorado has scored a combined 117 points.

So, what do the Cougars of C-Town have to do to be Covarrubiaz kryptonite?

One big thing Christoval can do is keep the Eldorado offense off the field.

Last week, Rocksprings may have given a glimpse into how to stop the Eagles. The Angoras huddled up, ran the play clock down to 1, ran a play, then huddled up, ran the play clock down to 1, ran a play. Rocksprings ate at the clock all game just like a goat would.

The halftime score was 13-0 in favor of Eldorado. They usually put that up in each quarter. Dominance eventually took over and the senior heavy squad of Eldo put up 40 points. The Angora defense did give Eldorado some trouble in the first half.

That’s where Christoval needs to look.

The Cougars have a pretty good team as well, especially the defense, specifically the secondary. Senior Beau Jolly and Junior Cayden Carpenter have 11 combined interceptions. Jolly has 6 and Carpenter has 5, which is tied in 2A football for 1st and 2nd. What might be more impressive is Jolly is tied for 2nd, 8th overall, and Carpenter is tied for 3rd, 30th overall, in the state.

That’s over all football players in Texas. 6A through 1A. Christoval has 2 of the top 30 players in interception in their secondary. Corvarrubiaz likes to throw it and the Cougar secondary must take over and snag one or two. That could be kryptonite.

Jake Boness, a linebacker for Christoval, made the Texas Sports Writer’s All-State 2nd Team last season. He’ll be a part of the front seven that must keep Covarrubiaz in check. Korbin has 10 rushing touchdowns in 4 games which means he’s just as dangerous rushing the ball as he is throwing it.

That’s where Jolly and Carpenter have to do their best Trevon Diggs impression. Christoval has run 4 interceptions back for scores.

Hold the ball, get a few turnovers, run the clock. Simple enough for a good team like Christoval.

This is a big game. The biggest game these two teams will face until the playoffs. Eldorado has enjoyed being ranked in the top 10 of 2A-2 classification. It’s a rivalry game as well. This could be a rough and tough, high scoring game with interceptions returned and big plays left and right.

One thing is for certain, COVER1 will be there so tune into SanAngeloLIVE.com for the COVER1 show starting around 7:30 p.m. for coverage, analysis, and highlights of the Eldorado/Christoval game and many other.
