GRAPE CREEK, TX – A 66-year-old woman with dementia was successfully located after a search in sub-freezing temperatures on January 23, according to The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office responded to reports of the woman’s disappearance on the north side of Grape Creek around 8 p.m. She had left her home on foot, accompanied by her small Chihuahua named Penny.
The woman, last seen wearing a bathrobe and house shoes, had been missing for over an hour when deputies arrived. A collaborative search effort ensued, involving the San Angelo Police Department’s drone team and additional resources as temperatures plummeted below freezing.
Just after 1:30 a.m., an air asset from U.S. Customs and Border Protection located the woman, who had fallen and was suffering from cold exposure. Deputies provided her with water and snacks while waiting for medical assistance and placed her in a warm patrol vehicle. During the wait, she expressed concern for her missing dog.
Another search was initiated and shortly after, Penny was located, shivering and awaiting rescue.
A deputy bundled Penny up and delivered her back to the female so a reunion could occur. The female was then transported to the hospital for further care, and Penny was taken home.
"We would like to thank the San Angelo Police Department, San Angelo Fire Department, and the US Customs and Border Protection for their assistance in making sure this incident had a happy ending," the sheriff's office stated.
